THE FIRST JOINT VENTURE - SOMERS BEAUTIFICATION AND SOMERSET
WOODS
Residents of
Somerset Woods have long been cooperating in keeping the common areas of their
neighborhood neat and attractive. Recently they asked the Somers Beautification
Committee for help in obtaining plants and flowers to beautify the area even
more. With the cooperation of Growers Direct, the Beautification Committee was
able to provide the plants and flowers needed.
These pictures
show the residents of Somerset Woods busy planning, preparing, and planting
their new garden and flower containers. Their plans include the installation of
a flag pole with appropriate lighting. Somers residents are urged to note the
project, located on Turnpike Road at the entrance to Somerset Woods.
Residents of other Somers neighborhoods with common areas, who are interested
in a similar joint venture and who are willing to supply the labor to prepare,
plant, and maintain their gardens are invited to contact the Committee. The
Beautification Committee will help with the planning and will provide the plants
but cannot accept commitments to maintain additional areas. The Committee’s
labor resources are stretched to the maximum.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
The purpose of our group is to make Somers a beautiful place to live and to
drive through. We plant flowers and shrubs at public locations and maintain the
areas throughout the year. During the holiday seasons we decorate areas in the
center of town and we have an ongoing tree-planting project for Somers.

Our newest project is the beginning of a Memorial Garden at the intersection of
Springfield Road, Turnpike Road, and Wood Road in North Somers. We have planted
the first tree, a dawn redwood, in memory of the victims of September 11, 2001.
We are in the process of preparing a plan for this garden, and when it is ready
people will be able to select their donation from the plan. Anyone who would
like to plant a living memorial for a loved one can contact members of Somers
Beautification.
Somers Beautification holds an annual plant sale on the Saturday after Mother's
Day each year at Growers Direct, Hampden Road. This is the only day of the year
that the public is able to shop at this wholesale grower's greenhouses. Growers
Direct has been a major benefactor for several years. They not only open their
doors to the public and share the day’s proceeds with us, they also provide
whatever plants we need each spring. We are very grateful to them.
As a group of volunteers we always welcome new members, and we are currently
short handed and will need additional help for the fall clean up and again in
the spring.
