New Scout Hall Fund Drive
Scouting in Somers has a long tradition going back more than 50 years. Some
current members of Troop 387 are 2nd or 3rd generation scouts. The spirit of
Scouting includes the fundamentals of teamwork, respect for nature, and
citizenship. To obtain the highest scouting rank of Eagle, a project
benefiting the community must be completed. Recent Somers Eagle Scout
projects were the construction of the handicap fishing platform at the Mill
Pond, picnic tables at the Senior Center, benches at the town park, and a
house numbering survey for the fire department.
A few years ago Troop 387 lost their scout hall due to the sale of the
property where it was located. Since then, the Scouts have been meeting at
the Kibbe Fuller Community Center. Sharing this common town facility does not
provide any space for on-going projects, permanent displays, or equipment
storage. Friends of Somers Troop 387, Inc., has been formed for the sole
purpose of building and managing a new scout hall.
Much has been accomplished to-date:
- A building site on Battle Street has been identified and a long-term
lease has been signed with a generous Somers resident.
- The building design, a log cabin structure, has been completed.
- The Town Planning and Zoning Boards have approved a site plan.
- Troop 387 has provided $5,000 of seed money for initial work on the
project.
- Somers Rotary Club has sponsored Pancake Breakfasts and has spear
headed a private fund raising effort.
- Local citizens and businesses have already generously committed
donations and construction services.
