2006 Scholarship Award

Criteria

 

 

The Somers Soccer Association (SSA) would like to offer two graduating seniors from Somers High School a scholarship of $1000.00 each.  We invite interested seniors who have participated in at least two full seasons of JV or Varsity soccer at SHS to apply for these scholarships immediately. One male and one female applicant will be selected to receive this scholarship.

 

Applications must be returned by May 17, 2006.

 

After receiving all the applications that are submitted before the deadline, the scholarship committee of the Somers Soccer Association Board will review all of the applications and discuss the merits and qualifications of each candidate. They will then cast their votes by paper ballot for one male and one female recipient.  In the case of a tie, the President of the Somers Soccer Association will cast the tie-breaking vote.  Only members of the Somers Soccer Association Board will discuss the scholarship candidates or their applications.

 

All discussions concerning the selection process will be held strictly confidential.

 

Presentation of the Somers Soccer Association Scholarship will be made by the President of the Association, a designated member of the SSA, or the Athletic Director at a place and time to be determined.

 

Scholarship Criteria

 

1.)      Applicant must currently be a SHS senior.

2.)      Applicant must have participated in at least 2 year of soccer at the varsity or junior varsity level at Somers High School.

3.)      Personal accomplishments and team accomplishments, such as being named team captain or participating in State Cup or championship tournaments should be cited.

4.)      Every applicant must be continuing on with higher education.

5.)      Any volunteer work, community service, participation in clubs, committees, civic or school organizations, etc. should be listed.

6.)      Two Letters of Recommendation are required and up to two additional letters may be presented.

7.)      A short personal statement as to why applicant deserves to receive this scholarship is required.

10.)            Attach a short typed essay (one-page, single spaced is preferred) explaining how you have demonstrated good sportsmanship in your daily life, both on and off the soccer field. Explain why you feel you deserve this scholarship.

 

 

11.)      Attach two (2) brief (one-page) letters of recommendation. The letters should be from an adult in your life who knows you well. It cannot, however, be from a family member.  One of these letters should be from a former or present coach in any sport, including but not limited to soccer, whom you have played for in school or a travel or recreation league. (Inclusion of up to two (2) additional one-page letters of recommendation is permitted, but not required.)
