Battle Street Playground to Get Renovation
Somers – As a part of a five-year plan to replace antiquated equipment at 3 Somers town playground areas (Field
Road, School Street, and Battle Street), the playground at Battle Street is now slated to get its much-needed
renovation.
The Somers Playground Committee, founded in 2002 by dedicated volunteers, just recently completed a total
reconstruction of the Field Road playground, complete with access to children of all abilities including
wheelchair-bound children.
In an effort to modernize the Battle Street facilities, the Playground Committee is creating a safe and stimulating
“Little Tikes Play Center”. Designed for the younger preschool and toddler child, this playground will offer a much
needed play area to an increasing number of young families in Somers. Structures being planned are a large
commercial-grade play-scape, new swings, fenced in play area with one large access opening, an engraved brick patio,
new benches, new picnic tables & trash receptacles, and much more.
In addition, a new paved path from the parking lot at the Kibbe Fuller Community Center to the brick patio will afford
greater access to parents with strollers as well as wheelchair-bound citizens who wish to attend summer concert series
or other outdoor events.
In an effort to raise funds for this undertaking, the Somers Playground Committee invites you to make a monetary
donation or set your name in stone by donating to the “Somers Playground Brick-a-thon Campaign”. Bricks being offered
are a 4”x 8” size for $50 and an 8” x 8” size for $75 both of which can be engraved with 1, 2, or 3 lines of the text
your choice (names and/or message), with each line utilizing up to 16 characters in length. These lasting contributions
will be a permanent part of the Battle Street Play Center Patio. To show your support, the Playground Committee requests
that your contributions be made by July 1, 2007. To donate or obtain a Brick-a-thon form, please contact Diane Childs at
763-2257 or 749-7333, or get the form here
The Somers Playground Committee hopes to reach the $15,000 goal needed for the Little Tikes Play Center on Battle Street
by early summer and have construction of the play area completed and ready for use by late summer 2007.
