Ernest J. Allsup has been named the Somers Republican of the Year.

Noting Allsup as being a dedicated father, community volunteer and civic leader, Allsup received a plaque of recognition for his dedication, accomplishments, integrity and service from David M. Reed, Chairman of the Somers Republican Town Committee, and was also awarded an official State Of Connecticut Citation and a Governor’s Proclamation by State Representative Penny Bacchiochi, 52nd House District.

Allsup was appointed to the Somers Board of Selectmen in February, 2003, to fill a board vacancy. He was then elected to a full term in November 2003, and re-elected to the Board in November, 2005.
As Selectman, Allsup was instrumental in creating the Town’s Elderly Tax Relief Program, which leverages state funds with town monies to give qualified elderly residents and disabled persons of Somers an enhanced property tax reduction of up to 75%.

Allsup was also involved in the town’s emergency response to the floods of 2005, the securing of the 265 acre Whittaker property as Open Space land, the expansion of the Somers Library, revision of the town charter, improved efficiencies in the town’s operation, increase housing for the elderly, strategic planning for the Somers School system, and equipment improvements for fire and ambulance.

As a community volunteer, Allsup founded the SomersNow website, was instrumental in establishing the successful Somers Rotary “Great Escape Road Race”, and served on the Investment Board of the Rotary’s Student Scholarship Committee. He also founded “Save” (Somers Voters and Advocates for Education), and was a supporter of the Community Partnership Council. He and his wife have also been continuing patrons of United Way.

As a dedicated father, Allsup and his wife, Stephanie, have supported their two sons, J.D. (11) and Trevor (9) in running and competitive gymnastics. Recently, at the American Gymnastics Invitational, both Trevor and J.D. won gold metals, and J.D. also won the coveted All-Around competition. Both boys are now qualified to participate in the State Gymnastics Championships.

In accepting his awards, Allsup stated that his personal goal has always been to cut through the chaff and get things accomplished.

Prior recipients of the Somers Republican of the Year were Hal Vita, Ed Sullivan, and Penny Bacchiochi.
