What Cancer Cannot Do
Cancer is so limited...
It cannot cripple love,
It cannot shatter hope,
It cannot corrode faith,
It cannot destroy peace,
It cannot kill friendship,
It cannot suppress memories,
It cannot silence courage,
It cannot invade the soul,
It cannot steal eternal life,
It cannot conquer the Spirit. |

Somers ---- A Heartfelt Thank You!
As we sit back today and reflect on the weekends events, we
are filled with emotion and pride. Proud that we were all part of such a
phenomenon and that we live in a community and are surrounded by other
communities that have such support and energy. The people, teams and
businesses that supported Relay for Life in Somers shined above and beyond
the sun the shined that day, and the stars and the moon that were behind the
clouds and rain that night. To those who stayed through the night and slept
on the hard gym floor, those who walked with or without umbrella’s in the
pouring rain, and those who returned in the early morning hours to take up
where the they left off before the lightening and rain, Thank You. Words can
not express the sincere thanks, emotions and pride we have for you. It was
truly one of Somers’ finest hours, and I do mean hours all 22 of them.
To the survivors that came to allow us to celebrate your life and to all
those who purchased luminaria and torches and allowed us to honor the memory

What is Relay For Life ?
A fun-filled overnight event designed to celebrate
survivorship and raise money for research and programs of your American
Cancer Society. During the event, teams of people will take turns walking or
running laps. Each team tries to keep at least one team member on the track
at all times.
A community fair. Few other events bring together all components of
a community from children to older adults like the Relay For Life. Games,
food, fun, music and activities fill the air of every Relay For Life as
everyone joins for a common cause and has fun doing it!
A demonstration of hope that those lost to cancer will never
be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one
day, cancer will be eliminated.
A luminaria
ceremony. Survivors and those who are no longer with us are honored at
this one-of-a-kind ceremony. Paper bags bearing the names of loved ones
line the track and often the entire stadium. A candle is placed inside and
is lit at dusk. Often the names of all of the bags are read to the sound
of heart-felt music. This moving, memorable portion of the event is often
the most powerful time of the entire Relay For Life activity.
The signature activity of the American Cancer Society.
More than 3300 events take place nationwide, and now, even around the
world in countries like Singapore and Australia. With the help of people
like you, Relay For Life has become the largest activity of its kind in
the country raising $243 million in 2002! But more than a fundraiser,
Relay For Life is:
A cancer survivor
event-within-an-event. At every Relay For Life, cancer survivors are
honored for their courage and strength by beginning the event with an
honorary lap. The individuals are celebrated in various ways from food and
t-shirts, to dances and games!
Luminaria Ceremony
A special luminaria ceremony held during the American Cancer Society
Relay For Life of Somers remembers those lost to cancer and honors those who
have survived. Luminarias will be lit at Somers High School on May 15 at
10:00p.m. to represent these individuals.
Anyone desiring to purchase a luminaria (candle lantern) may do so by
contacting Terri Henderson at 749-6886. Each luminaria candle is $5.00.
“It will be beautiful when all the bags with candles are illuminated around
the track,” said Terri Henderson, luminaria chair. “We hope to sell enough
to light the entire area.”
Relay For Life is a fun-filled overnight event. Teams of eight to 15 members
will gather with tents and sleeping bags to join 4,200 communities
nationwide that are hosting Relays. Relay For Life brings together friends,
families, businesses, hospitals, schools, churches ... people from all walks
of life. Teams seek sponsorship prior to the Relay, all with the goal of
eliminating cancer.
Information about purchasing a luminaria, forming a team, or walking in the
survivors’ lap is available by calling JJ Wassmuth at 860-763-5145.
Forms can be picked-up at Somers Banks, The Library and Town Hall
