Team Phoenix is comprised of thirteen Somers High School seniors who designed and entered an electric car in the competition at Lime Rock race track. Competitors came from as far away as New York and Vermont.

Brilliant (as described by the students) Roy Slater initiated the program in 2004, and watched it grow inot an exciting, successfull program., which encourages students to study harder, learn more, give more and become fully involved

. Each year, an entirely new car is developed and built by the students. An only seniors rule ensures research and development is begun from scratch. This year, the team won second place in the composite division, which is the number of laps in one hours driving. Team Phoenix did 108 laps against the 121 lap first place car. Somers also won the trophy for best engineering.
