An Evening of Excellence
Coming This Fall !!
First Award Granted
The Somers Education Foundation announces the award of its first
grant to the science department of the Somers Public Schools. This grant will
allow 40 students a unique learning opportunity in the forensics field. The
project is the “vision” of Mary Anne Butler, Science Specialist, who will
supervise all facets of this program. The project is to construct a crime scene,
where an act of arson occurs and students will be responsible for the
investigation. Lou Bachetti, President of the Foundation states, “This unique
project brings together many private and municipal resources for the benefit of
our students.”
A ceremonial presentation and project overview will be held on Thursday December
2, at 10:00 am at the Somers Firehouse in the Craig Arnone Memorial Hall. The
presentation will be followed by the “project burn” under the supervision of the
Somers Fire Department. Students will conduct the arson investigation on
December 7th and 8th. The public is invited to attend.

Why an Education Foundation?
Simply put, tax support for public education has not kept pace
with the community’s high expectations for students success. The Foundation will
provide funding to augment the tax supported budget. The Foundations work may
supplement the Board of Educations’ educational priorities, but it is not a
substitute for them. The Foundation will not fund items and programs considered
to be a normal part of the school budget.
About the Foundation
The Foundation is a non-political entity, independent of both
the Board of Education and town government. It is registered with the State of
Connecticut and with the Internal Revenue Service 501c3 and is bound by their
regulations. It is governed by a volunteer board of directors who oversee the
Foundations operation. The membership of the Foundations board includes Somers
business persons, school parents, senior citizens, and other community leaders.
Ex-officio board members include the Superintendent of Schools, Chairperson of
the Board of Education, a member of the Board of Selectmen, and a certified
public accountant.
