VISION
To create an environment where residents, the business
community, educational system, town officials and government
work together to optimize the quality of life in our community. MISSION
Our mission is to promote the planned economic growth of
Somers tax base in a manner consistent with the plan of
conservation and development while complementing and enhancing
the towns rural and historic character. MEMBERSHIP
The commission consists of seven(7) members appointed by the board of
selectmen for terms of five(5) years each. Two alternate members are appointed
for terms of two(2) years each. POWERS and DUTIES
a. The commission shall conduct research into the economic conditions and
trends in the town, shall make recommendations to appropriate officials and
agencies of the town regarding action to improve its economic condition and
development, shall seek to coordinate the activities of and cooperate with
unofficial bodies organized to promote such economic development and may
advertise and may prepare, print and distribute books, maps, charts and
pamphlets which in its judgment will further its official purposes.
b. The commission shall annually prepare and transmit to the annual Town Report
a report of its activities and of its recommendations for improving such
economic conditions and development. MEETINGS
An annual schedule of meetings is posted at the town hall and a copy of such
schedule can be obtained from any commission member. All meetings are open to
the public.
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION GOALS FOR 2006
· Complete and publish guidelines for applications and permits.
· Supporting local business and industry:
a. Organize and conduct a town wide business summit
b. Publish a Somers' business guide
c. Expand business visitation program
* Promote Somers tourism:
a. Finalize a list of Somers tourism sites and activities
b. Publish tourism guide
* Implement recommendations designated in the Plan of Conservation and
Development.
· Conduct new business development activities:
a. Maintain listing of available properties in Somers
b. Publish a list of new businesses
· Develop and publish a Somers economic development plan.
