Emergency Tips
Below are suggested steps you and your family should take to prepare for an
emergency at home - a storm, flood, fire or other crisis
1. Update Emergency Contact Information - Update and distribute
emergency contact information to family members and close friends so they can
reach you in an emergency.
2. Create a Home Emergency Evacuation Plan - Plan and practice the
safest, most expedient ways, including alternate routes, to exit your home in an
emergency - doors, fire escapes, stairways and windows.
3. Designate and Communicate a Family Meeting Place - Select a place or
location for your family to meet in case of an emergency. If possible, identify
a place nearby that offers safe shelter. Communicate your meeting location to
other family members and close friends.
4. Assess Shelter-in-Place Preparations - Review preparations and
procedures for keeping family members "sheltered-in-place" at home until it is
safe to leave following a natural disaster or crisis.
5. Prepare Emergency "GO" bags - Organize emergency supplies in a "GO"
bag containing essentials for personal safety and comfort. Remember, the basics
of survival are: fresh water, food, clean air and warmth. Include a flashlight
and batteries, battery-powered radio, First Aid Kit, water bottles, canned food,
snacks, copies of medical prescriptions, whistle to signal for help, dust masks,
moist towelettes, blanket, and a can opener. Check your "GO" bag at least twice
a year to refresh water and batteries.
6. Keep your Emergency Plan Up-to-Date - Set aside time for a family
meeting at home to focus on preparedness. Review your evacuation plan and "GO"
bag, and practice your exit procedures.
