SOMERS SCHOOL BUILDING CONSTRUCTION COMMITTEE

                                                      July 11, 2002

Members Present: J.Persano, T.Cowles, J.Butler, H.Broer, J.Formeister,

                               D.Pinney, J.O'Brien (7:19)

Ex-Officio:  K.Klein, B.Boutwell, T.Jefferson, J.MacFeat

Guests:  D.Moser

Citizens:  T.Geib

The meeting was called to order at 7:02p.m. by Vice-Chairman Persano.

Minutes were approved unanimously as presented (Broer, Butler).  Doug Moser

commented on the reference to civil defense headquarters being moved from

SES.  He was told there are several other places in town that can be used for

this.  K.Klein understood other locations do not have all the necessary

equipment/facilities.  It was decided we need clarification on this issue.

D.Moser shared a list of spaces needed at MBA compiled from a meeting with

MBA administrators on 6/27.  He also shared a list of Central Office and BOE

needs from a meeting with T.Jefferson, B.Boutwell, Carolyn Hazard, and Pat

Collin on 6/28.

D.Moser reviewed with the committee two detailed floor plans for the Central

Office/BOE area.  There was discussion of the size of the Board room,

location of the Main Office and superintendent's office, etc.  Option A is

preferred.

The maintenance building addition (75'x30') and athletic storage building

(26'x30'), with 2 toilets and a concession stand, were discussed.

Handouts were reviewed of costs specific to each part of the building

project, conceptual budget and soft costs, along with anticipated state

reimbursement rates for each part.

J.Persano reported he and the Town Treasurer are working on figures and will

use this latest information to prepare numbers for the next meeting.

J.Formeister reported she had spoken with Peter Prowda from the State Ded.

about school enrollment projections.  There is no new or further data at this

time, and nothing is expected before December, so the committee must estimate

based on current information.  There was discussion as to whether we have

allowed for enough growth at SES or if we should consider two additional

classrooms; this would affect our reimbursement rate minimally (a fraction)

and would be a small increase to the budget..

The state is requiring a more detailed report proving MBA should be renovated

as new.  A motion was made (O'Brien), seconded (Cowles), and approved

unanimously to accept and sign a contract with Moser Pilon Nelson to do a

complete analysis of the cost benefits of new construction vs renovation at

MBA by 9/15/02, for a fee of $8700.  The contract will be forwarded to the

First Selectman to sign.

Motion to adjourn at 8:27p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Joan Formeister, Secretary
