II Audience:
First
Selectman David Pinney reported on the proposal by the Somers Soccer
Association to install lights on a soccer field on the Field Road Park. He reported that a leasing agreement between
the Soccer Association and the Town of Somers is not feasible. Mr. Pinney asked
that the Commission draw up a agreement where the Soccer Association could have
priority use of the lights. No consensus could be reached on such an agreement.
Chris
Munier, representing Somers Ponytail Softball, made a to purchase two backstops
for the softball fields on Sokol Road.
The Recreation Commission will accept the donation of the backstops,
which will become town park property.
III Reports:
a. Summer Camps: The
Commission is still seeking candidates for the position of Summer Camp
Director.
An Ad Hoc Camp
Committee was formed. Members are Dan
Avery, John Bartolf, Tom Chilicki, and Jenifer Charette.
The
Commission approved the sponsorship of two summer basketball camps. There will be a boys camp provide by Slamma
Jamma and a girls camp provided by The Springfield Spirit.
b. Park: Mike
Provencher reported there was damage to the soccer field caused by vehicles
driving on the field; a new roof has been installed on the park storage
facility; the Gazebo has been cleaned and painted, and the bathrooms have been
restored to a usable condition.

2003-04: Was reviewed

Budget 2004-05: No new report

Soccer Camp: No new report

Business:
a. CIP: No new report
b. Field/Facilities: The opening of all town athletic fields are
scheduled for an April 15th opening, weather permitting. All athletic organizations are asked not to
use the fields until they are officially opened by the Parks Department.
V New
Business:
a. Community Center Renovations: First
Selectman David Pinney reported that the latest proposal for the renovations to
the Community Center calls for the Recreation Coordinator’s office and the Teen
Center to remain in the Community Center but be moved to the second floor. Commission members were pleased that both
will remain in the Community Center but did not endorse moving the Teen Center
to the second floor because of lack of adequate space.
