SENIOR ADVISORY BOARD

MINUTES OF MARCH 9, 2004 MEETING

   

CALL TO ORDER:  Meeting called to order at 1:00 P.M. by Municipal Agent Jim Burgess.

 

MEMBERS PRESENT:  Jim Burgess, Pat Broer, Elaine Bemont, Norma Keeney, Loyal Madden and Arlene Yarnes.

 

MEMBERS ABSENT:  Alice D’Arcy, Leone Lakonski and Dora Randall..

 

VISITOR(S):  Ray Trask

 

APPROVAL OF MINUTES:  Minutes of February 10, 2004 meeting accepted by Pat Broer and seconded by Arlene Yarnes.

 

CORRESPONDENCE:  Note received from Dora Randall stating she would be unable to attend meeting.

 

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Meals on Wheels – As of 02/28/2004, the savings account balance was $11,899 after  a withdrawal of $1,000.  Checking account balance was $1,559.22 after deposits of $2,559 and disbursements of $1,773.  Sixteen clients were served 482 meals with a subsidized amount of $526 for the period of 02/01/2004 to 02/29/2004. 

 

Senior Center – Ray Trask reported things are running smoothly.  A computer has ben set up in the Sun Room so that a computer class could be held while other activities are happening at the Senior Center.

 

Senior Lunches – Arlene Yarnes reported that the next luncheon will be held on Tuesday, March 23, 2004 at the Congregational Church in Somersville.  Sign-up sheet is available at the Senior Center and information sheets have been distributed to the various churches.  A luncheon is tentatively planned to be held in April at the K of C but still needs to be confirmed.  The May luncheon will be at the high school with a date to be forthcoming.

 

Trips – Bus trips/bus and show trips are planned for Mohegan Sun Casino on April 1 and June 14, 2004.  April 1 show is Michael Amante and June 14 will be Vicki Lawrence and Mamma. 

 

Foxwoods trips are scheduled for May 20 and July 19.  

 

A trip is being planned for the New Hampshire Lakes and Mountains on September 8 and 9, 2004 in conjunction with the Somers Recreation Department.  Pat Broer will plan future trips for the Somers seniors together with the Somers Recreation Department.

 

OLD BUSINESS:

Establish Committee for 2005 Anniversary – This item has been tabled until the election of the new executive board later this month.

 

Senior Center Hours – The hours of the Senior Center will be from 8:00 to 4:00.  Jim Burgess, Municipal Agent, will continue to be there from noon until 4:00.

 

Senior Bus – All calls for use of the Senior Bus should be directed through Senior Center personnel and not by making calls directly to the bus driver.

 

NEW BUSINESS:

Bus Pickups – Idea was presented to possibly have two bus pickups at the Wednesday luncheons so the seniors could stay for any programs or activities presented if they care to do so.

 

Memorial Garden for Carol Dion – This item was tabled until the new executive board takes office.

 

COMMENTS:

 We are continuing to look for new ways to interest other citizens in town on what is available to them from their local senior center.  An Open House at the Senior Center is being planned for Saturday, April 10, 2004 from one to four o’clock..

 

The members of the Senior Advisory Board are looking forward to working closely with the Executive Board members.

 

The Senior Advisory Board was glad Loyal Madden was feeling well enough to attend this meeting.
