                RECREATION COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES

                                          Monday, 7:30 PM, June 6, 2005

                                             Recreation Office-Town Hall

 

I.          CALL TO ORDER: At 7:40 PM by Tom Chilicki.

 

MEMBERS PRESENT: Tom Chilicki, Alan Walker, John Bartolf, JJ Wassmuth

 

            MEMBERS ABSENT: Geoff Elia

 

            MEMBERS LATE: Ed Palomba (8:58 PM), Chris Meunier (8:10 PM)

 

NON-MEMBERS PRESENT: Mike Provencher, Jen Charette (arrived 8:25 PM); First Selectman David Pinney

 

AUDIENCE: Tom Mazzoli (BOF); Somers Basketball represented by Jim Belisle and Sloan Stetson; Somers Women’s Volleyball represented by Betsy DeRoma, Terry Carllo, and Melissa Hughes; Wayne and Nancy DeGray; Paul Munson, Lisa Gallagher; Payground Committee represented by Kurt Swan, Mark Christian, Gabrielle Crandell, Barbara Capuano, Diane Chrics, Maria Splain, Terry Nejfelt, Debra Whuferd, Patricia Els.

 

lI.            MINUTES OF LAST MEETING: The commission approved the May 2nd, 2005 regular meeting minutes by a unanimous 4-0 vote.

 

lll.            AUDIENCE: See above.

           

            Playground Committee: The committee presented a detailed folder summarizing the master plan and all work to date (Jen Charette to make copies for all commission members). The commission discussed the donation approved at the last meeting (and approved by the BOS), grants, timing, and budgetary concerns. The committee agreed to include Jen Charette on all correspondence to be forwarded to the attention of the recreation commission.

 

            Somers Women’s Volleyball/SBA: Betsy DeRoma read the letter from the Women’s Volleyball board (see correspondence) and presented 2004-05 registrations and budgets.

 

            Culver Modisette SHS Lax: No discussion (Culver Modisette not in attendance).

 

Wayne DeGray Letter: Wayne DeGray read the letter presented to the commission (see correspondence) regarding his association and issues with the Somers Soccer Association. Discussion was held on safety concerns (including the availability of medical forms), coaching concerns, and the role of the recreation commission with affiliated sports associations. The commission recommended that Mr. DeGray approach the Somers Soccer Association board concerning these issues, and Tom Chilicki will forward a letter to SSA regarding the timely issue of medical forms and the commission’s concern for the safety of all youth participants.

 

lV.            BILLS/PURCHASES: Reviewed and approved.

 

V.            REPORTS:

 

A.     Park Committee: The CIP report was reviewed by the commission. A special meeting will be scheduled by Tom Chilicki for June 13th to review self-support and 2004-05 regular budget spending on park improvements.

 

B.    Park Maintenance: Mike Provencher reported damage done to all park fields (car driving on fields).

 

C.    Budget: Reviewed and discussed. Year end spending to be summarized by Jen Charette prior to the to-be-scheduled June 13th special meeting. Tom Chilicki will investigate association usage of school gymnasiums relative to recreation line item.

 

D.  Self Support Budget: Reviewed and discussed.

 

E.             Summer Camp: Jen Charette stated the camp is on-schedule to open on June 27th for 8 weeks. Jen will update the commission as needed prior to the next regular recreation commission meeting.

 

Vl.       OLD BUSINESS:

 

A.     Fields/Facilities: Discussion was held with Mike Provencher and First Selectman Dave Pinney on timing issues with park improvements and regular maintenance, including the commission’s request for obtaining more help. The commission also discussed the status of the soccer light poles still not removed from the park. Discussion was also held on the skateboard park, and Jen Charette was asked to provide the commission with a copy of the insurance policy covering the skateboard park.

 

B.    CIP: Jen Charette will follow-up with Papalardo Fence on the status of the revised quotes and timing. Discussion was also held on this project being managed by Jen Charette and Mike Provencher while being overseen by the recreation commission.

 

VII.      NEW BUSINESS:

 

A.     Board of Selectman (if they attend): See above. Discussion was held on the commission’s concerns for field conditions, field usage, and the need to re-furbish all of our fields.

 

VIII.            COORDINATOR'S REPORT: The commission reviewed Jen Charette’s report.

 

IX.            OTHER: Jen Charette requested of the First Selectman for approval to install the recreation sign in front of the Kibbe Fuller building.

 

X.             CORRESPONDENCE:

A. June 6, 2005 letter from the Somers Women’s Volleyball League Officers.

B. Wayne DeGray’s letter (no date) concerning Somers Soccer Association.

C. May 9, 2005 letter from the Community Health Resources.

 

 

XI.            ADJOURNMENT: The commission adjourned at 10:30 PM.
