APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Minutes of September 13, 2005 meeting accepted by Pat Bachetti and seconded by Barbara Flebotte.
CORRESPONDENCE: Letter received from Phyllis and David Gwilliam suggesting adding a column to the newsletter on questions seniors might have. Subsequently, answers could appear in the monthly newsletter.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Meals on Wheels – For the
period of September 5, 2005 through October 1, 2005, twenty clients were served
a total of 487 meals. $1,802.00 was
paid to the Plaza Restaurant and $1,317.00 was billed to clients. Subsidized amount for the month was
$485.00. Two clients dropped out of the
program citing the cost of the meals as an issue. David Pinney is looking into a state program that might help
people such as these deal with the cost of the meals as finances are very tight
for some individuals. Volunteer drivers
are also needed to help keep this program going.
Senior Center – Joan Sizer took over as president of the Senior
Citizens Club as of 10/1/05 following the resignations of Myrtle Pixley and Ray
Trask. Openings still exist on her
board for a vice president and secretary.
October 19th will feature the Carol Dion luncheon for paid-up
club members. Plans are in works for a
Christmas Party. It was felt that Joan,
as club president, should have a key to the building. She will work with Jim Burgess regarding opening and closing of
the facility.
Senior Lunches – Arlene Yarnes reported that there will be a luncheon at the Baptist Church on Tuesday, October 25, 2005. Feature will be a meatloaf dinner. There will be no further meals until February. This will be held at the Somers Congregational Church.
Communications/Senior Newsletter – Barbara Flebotte prepared a form she would like used by anyone wishing to have an article enclosed in the newsletter. This form gives her key information as to where their items should be published, etc. It was also discussed about having a separate page for Somers Citizens Club news which could tell of monthly activities, meals for the month, etc. The Advisory Board was in agreement of adding this page. The Board also agreed to go ahead with the question and answer suggestion of the Gwilliams. Questions would be presented to the Board for their answer and publication would take place in the newsletter.
OLD BUSINESS:
Flu Clinic – Senior flu clinic is scheduled for Tuesday, October 25, 2005 at the Senior Center. Reservations are necessary. Appointments run from 1:30 until 4:30. Nearly 300 people have already signed up.
Board Assignments – The following assignments are currently in place. This will become a part of our regular meeting:
It is hoped to have a speaker from UCONN here on October 26th to speak about the new Medicare Part D program. It is possible that a representative from Social Security may also be here on that day. Dave Pinney is trying to work this issue.
NEW BUSINESS:
The November meeting of the Advisory Board will be held on
Tuesday, November 1 rather than November 8th. This is because the Center is used as a
voting place.
Pat Bachetti would like to see the Advisory Board sponsor a program at the Senior Center to try to attract new seniors to the Center. Board members were asked to think of some programs that might be considered for this activity.
Joan Sizer commented on an article that appeared in the Journal Inquirer from Somers resident Harry Wheeler. Mr. Wheeler made some statements that were not completely correct. It was felt a response to this article should be sent to the JI. Joan and Dave Pinney will work together to prepare this article.
ADJOURNMENT: Adjournment at 2:45P.M. by motion of Pat Bachetti and seconded by Arlene Yarnes.
Respectfully submitted,
Elaine L. Bemont, Secretary
