VISITOR(S):  None

APPROVAL OF MINUTES:  Minutes of September 12, 2006 meeting accepted by Barbara Flebotte and seconded by Myrtle Pixley.

CORRESPONDENCE:  E-mails from Joan Sizer to Jim Burgess relative to several issues will be discussed later in the meeting.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Meals on Wheels – David Pinney was not present with the monthly update.  However, Jim Burgess was pleased to announce that Ann Houston has been appointed the new Meals on Wheels Coordinator and will be working closely with the volunteer drivers.

Pat Bachetti did a survey as to how the Meals on Wheels Program is handled in towns about the same size as Somers.  Ellington and Stafford get their meals from the Connecticut Renewal Team.  Hot lunches in Ellington are $2.00 daily and $4.00 if getting a sandwich also.  Stafford’s cost is about $2.00 daily.  Pat is going to contact personnel of the Connecticut Renewal Team  to find out more information as to how this program operates.  She also contacted personnel in East Granby about their program.  Their food is provided by the McLean Home following referral by a physician, etc.

Senior Lunches – Arlene Yarnes was not present.

Senior Citizens Club – Joan Sizer was not present.

Communications/Senior Newsletter – Barbara Flebotte reported that the North Central News would include photos in an article in their newspaper and they would appreciate an article in our newsletter advising people to look for and read these articles.  The Journal Inquirer would not use photos in our monthly write-up.  We could, however, have their  staff photographer take pictures of any noteworthy events taking place at the center.  Barbara was commended for doing a splendid job on our newsletter.

Senior Center Sign – Donna Doyker was not present.  Thanksgiving and Holiday greetings would probably be the next items showing on the sign.

School Liaison – No news on this item at this time.

Senior Support Services – Pat Bachetti reported that she is in touch with six people.  They will be having a little holiday auction in December.

OLD BUSINESS:

Senior Advisory Committee Members According to Charter 5-17 – Per motion of Barbara Flebotte and second by Dorothy Hillman, the board recommended that no changes be made to the referenced code at this time.   A drop-in representative could be any senior who comes into the Center.

Current List of Seniors – Barbara Flebotte made a motion that Jim Burgess contact the Registrar of Voters requesting a list of Somers residents 65 and over showing only their name and address.  Motion was seconded by Myrtle Pixley.  Information needs to be on a disk or a CD.  This information is long overdue.

Resource Guide – Connie Carenza should have this information in her computer memory.  It was held up for some necessary changes.  Hopefully, this will be able to be updated soon.  Jim Burgess will check further into this.

NEW BUSINESS:

Order of Agenda – Board members present felt we should stick with our current agenda.  Modifications could be made at any meeting if the need arises.

COMMENTS:

Jim received an e-mail from Joan Sizer regarding the use of the senior center building by various groups.  Question is:  Who should be allowed to use the Senior Center?  Since this is a town building, what are the liability issues?  Jim felt this should be a decision made by the selectmen and wished to wait and see what this decision is.  It was felt, however, that other groups using the center should provide their own coffee, cups, etc.

It is important for the Board members to keep in mind that after the first of the year we will be taking some action on helping the Municipal Agent with the budget.

Our next meeting will be a Holiday Luncheon Meeting on Tuesday, December 12th.  A short business meeting will be held followed by a lunch.

ADJOURNMENT:  Adjournment at 12:30 by motion of Myrtle Pixley and seconded by Pat Bachetti.

Respectfully submitted,

Elaine L. Bemont, Secretary
