COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Meals on Wheels – David Pinney was not here today.  Sue King reported that all is going well at the present time.

Senior Lunches – Arlene Yarnes stated the first lunch of the year was held on February 26th at the Somers Congregational Church.  The next luncheon is at the Somersville Congregational Church on March 25.

Senior Citizens Club – Arlene Yarnes reported that nominations of new officers has taken place and voting will be done at the March meeting on the 20th.  Arlene is slated to be the new president of the club.  There will be a St. Patrick’s theme lunch tomorrow and carnations will be given out to everyone.

Communications – Barbara Flebotte has assumed the position of head of communications and will now be doing the newsletter.  She will be collecting news from several sources monthly.  She will be checking into various ways to have the letter printed commercially and the pricing for doing this.  Printing Inc. of Somers is one possibility.  Perhaps ads could be sold which could help defray the cost of doing the newsletter at an outside source.  If it should be decided to sell ads, it is hoped to establish a special fund for any extra money received and this money could be used to help seniors in their time of need.

Jim is looking into the contact person at the town hall in order to have the newsletter appear on Somersnow.com.

Senior Center Sign – Donna Doyker was absent.

School Liaison – Donna Doyker was absent.

Senior Support Services – Pat Bachetti was not present at this meeting.

OLD BUSINESS:

Ways to Better Help our Seniors – Dave Pinney suggested in February that we think of ways the town could better serve our seniors and get them more active in our town.  We will be conducting a telephone/questionnaire survey to try and come up with some answers in this regard.

Life Line Screening – Screening will be done on March 15 from 9 to 4 at the Senior Center.  Reservations are necessary.

NEW BUSINESS:

Senior Assistance – Connie Carenza, Social Services of the Town of Somers, has been approached by the President of the Rotary with a desire to help our seniors with various projects i.e. small repairs, ramps, etc.  This is a wonderful opportunity for those  who need this service.  Barbara Flebotte suggested that the Fire Department be contacted for their help in aiding seniors in changing their smoke alarm batteries, installing new ones, etc.

Cholesterol Screening – Jim is arranging to have this service done sometime during June.

Senior Survey – We are looking for areas of interest for our seniors.  One thing stated would be to have a representative from the Social Security Administration here once a month for any questions our seniors (or approaching seniors) might have.
