General Membership Meeting

 

March 20, 2008

Somers High School Media Center

 

Members Present:  Jean Mandirola, Laura Braica, Kathy Brewer, Nora Kopec and

Amanda Vesce

 

              I.      Meeting called to order:  7:10 p.m. by Laura Braica

               

 

            II.      Previous Meeting Minutes:  No changes; Motion made to accept previous minutes by Kathy Brewer, seconded by Laura Braica.  Unanimously approved.

 

          III.      Correspondence: 

·        PTA Convention – Will be held May 1 – 2, 2008.  Any member interested in attending, please contact either Co-President -- Jean Mandirola (749-2270) or Laura Braica (763-4758)

·        Received $108 contribution from Cathy Zawrotny from Lia Sophia party that was booked at Vendor Fair – further fund raising initiatives are available through Lia Sophia

 

         IV.      Treasurer’s Report:

·        Report presentation waived. 

 

           V.      President’s Report:

·        No additional report provided – all topics will be covered during meeting.

 

         VI.      Principal’s Report:  Gary Cotzin submitted report:

·         Post CAPT to Spring Break -- back to basics at the HS

·         Prism Concert 27th March at 7p.m.

·         Spring Sports have begun--games officially start in less than two weeks

·        Booster Club "Fields of Dreams" – see web site regarding brick order

       VII.      Board Members’ Reports:

Ø      Membership – Nora Kopec (report provided by N. Kopec)

v     15 new members generated from mid-year membership drive; bringing membership total to 103

v     New dues will be deposited by 3/31 to make SHS seniors eligible to apply for PTA Nutmeg scholarship (Applications are available in the Counseling & Career Center)

v     Winners from membership drawing – Joy Squillace and Edna Smith (will receive gift cards)

 

Ø      Safe Graduation – Carol Winter

v     No report provided

v     NOTE: Next Safe Grad meeting will be held Thursday, April 3rd at SHS Perreault Center (teacher’s room near café)

 

 

 

 

Ø      Scholarship Fund – Laura Stark (report provided by L. Braica)

v     Have received $374 in donations to date

v     Applications are available in Counseling & Career Center; must be submitted by April 30, 2008

 

Ø      Staff Appreciation – Kathy Brewer

v     Panera Bread can not support event

v     Staff luncheon tent. scheduled for May 8th; need to confirm with Gary

v     Kathy pricing food at Costco

v     Discussed suggestions for small gifts for teachers

v     Information will be distributed to parents and students about sending e-cards of appreciation to teachers; info will also be given to class officers

 

Ø      Parent Directory – Kathy Brewer and Jean Mandirola

v     93 directories were distributed electronically to parents who completed request forms in September

v     Received positive feedback regarding directory

 

 

 

Ø            Fundraising

 

v     Clean Comedian (Jean Mandirola)

·        Booked act for November 21, 2008

·        Will hopefully use this event as one of the major PTSA fund raisers

·        Discussed possibility of providing dinner prior to show

 

v     Variety Show ticket and concession sales

·        Very successful show; large fundraiser for Safe Graduation

·        Sold over 400 tickets; at concession sold ice cream and water

 

v     Mother’s Day Plant sale

·        pending

 

v     Diploma sale (Gail Hoff)

·        Cards being reprinted with no date so leftovers can be used by future classes; JJ following up with printer

·        Header will read, “Salute to Seniors”

 

 

 

     VIII.      Old Business: 

·              By law review - Jean and Laura will update and submit to CT PTA for record

·              College Alumni Forum – Jean is coordinating for June 3rd; former students – current college freshmen will present at junior/senior class assembly

 

 

 

         IX.      New Business:

·              NOTE:  SPECIAL combined  PTSA/PTA meeting April 10th, 7pm, SES Media Center; budget presentation by Dr. Maynard Suffredini

·              PTSA Executive Board position recruitment:  Anyone interested in becoming an executive board member, please contact a member of the nominating committee:  Kathy Brewer (749-4493), Nora Kopec (763-2456) or Amanda Vesce (763-2748)

·              PTSA would like to support the Booster’s buy a brick program – will discuss finances and potential for purchase at the next meeting

·              Discussed potential fundraising suggestion for next year – A Father/Daugher dance

 

 

           X.      Meeting Adjournment:  Motion made at 8:45 p.m. by Laura Braica to adjourn meeting; seconded by Nora Kopec.  Unanimously approved.
