Bird Watching

When: Sunday, May 4

Where: McCann Family Farm, Whit Davis Bird Sanctuary

Cost: Free

Recommended for adults and children 8 and older.  

If you have an interest in wild birds and want to learn more about our feathered friends please join our guide on an outing of bird watching.  He will take you to different habitats to look and listen for birds and learn how to identify them.Learn to indentify by sight or song dozens of the 112 species of birds recorded thus far from this local birding “hot spot”.  Binoculars are optional.  May be muddy so boots are recommended.  Please call the rec. dept. 763-8231 to sign-up. Pre-register but no fee.

Somers Outdoor Festival

Hiking, Biking, Canoeing and Horseback Riding, along with exhibits and a Free Concert will be offered for the Annual “SOMERS OUTDOORS FESTIVAL”

  Wild Food & Ecology Tour

When: Sunday, June 8    2:00-5:00 PM

Where: Meet at the entrance of Soapstone Mountain State Forest on Gulf Rd.

Cost: $10 adults   $5 children

Join international famous “Wildman” Steve Brill as he comes to Somers for the first time in this Recreation Department arranged attraction!  This will be a highly educational, informative and entertaining special tour.   On this hike Mr. Brill will point out numerous overlooked edible and medicinal wild herbs, greens, and mushrooms that grow wild in natural areas throughout the region.  Under his expertise you will learn to recognize many natural food sources and gather  them ecologically for use as food and home remedies.  Greenbrier, cattails, violets, garlic mustard, burdock root, wild mint, and much more is right under your nose!  The tour leader “Wildman” Steve seasons the seasonal edibles with generous helpings of science and conservation, a pinch of folklore and mythology, a dash of history and an all natural extract of cooking information; all tossed together with his jokes, humor, and anecdotes!  Bring a plastic bag for vegetables and herbs and paper bag for mushrooms.  Also bring some drinking water

  Hikes on the McCann Farm
WILDFLOWER, FERN, CLUB-MOSS AND TREE HIKES on the McCANN FARM

Sundays in May, June, July, August, September and October. 

These natural history oriented hikes are led by Dr. Jerry Stage with help from Northern Ct. Land Trust members. 

They will vary from 2-3 miles, last 2-3 hours and will cover various trails on the beautiful McCann Family farm property.

  Sunset Moonlight Hike at Skyline Scenic Area

When: Saturday, April 12

Where: Meets at 6:45 PM at the Somers Town Hall Parking Lot

Cost: Free

.

Join members of the Northern Ct. Land Trust for a leisurely hike up the Ledge trail (1/2 mile) to view sunset over the Ct. River Valley.  With the right conditions this can be one spetacular sight!  Then you will hike northward 3-4 miles on Minnechaug Mountain and back to the cars by an alternative route.  Bring flashlights.  Hikers are welcomed to join the group leaders for pizza at the Italian Villa at 5:00 PM before the hike.   You may contact hike leader Jerry Stage at 870-4255.
