Instructor: William Hall of the Sagittarian Archery Academy

Archery is a great activity for kids & adults.   It teaches patience, concentration and attention

to detail. Archery is an individual sport where children can learn and have fun at their own pace,

without any pressure from "the team". There are many forms of archery which can be enjoyed

throughout life.  Students will enjoy one hour of shooting each week, while also learning the

history of archery and proper archery terminology. Classes are taught with an emphasis on

safety and proper technique. Students will be able to qualify for Junior Olympic Archery Development awards.

Look in the Summer Camp section of this flyer for information on summer archery clinics beginning in June.

There will also be a fall session beginning 9/18 (5 weeks) 4pm & 5pm

Babysitting

When:  Babysitting will return in June   

Fee: $20

Location: Somers Community Center

Class min: 10  max: 16

 

This program will enable young adults to confidently handle the responsibilities associated with child care. 

This three session course will involve infant care and 1st aid along with fire, home and phone safety.  A portion

of the course is also geared towards the older sibling who is “home-in-charge” of their brother or sister. 

Because the course is condensed into 6 hours, attendance is mandatory to receive your Somers Recreation

Babysitting Home-In-Charge Certificate.  Please register with the Recreation Department for this program. 

A minimum of 10 students are required to hold this class.

Baton Twirling

When: Mondays, Classes run between 3:30 and 8pm   

Registration Sept. 22: age 5-6 5:30-6pm; 8 and up 6-6:30pm all former students 6:30-7pm

Where: Somers Recreation /Community Center Gym

Feet: $20 per month/ 45 min classes

Learn the fundamentals of twirling including body passes, rolls and finger twirls. 

Children will be put into classes based on age and skill level. Batons are available.

Beginner Guitar

Enroll in the Hip Hop Dance class and you’ll be ready for those school dances and parties.

Each week your instructor will demonstrate a new Hip Hop dance, then break it down

part by part and show you how to do it.  Students may join the class at anytime.

Bowling

When:,  Begins April 30  

 

Where: Shaker Bowl in East Longmeadow

Cost: $9.50 per week

The popular Shaker Bowl after school bowling program.  A bus will pick up kids at MBA School and SES School, where a supervisor will check them on, and then the bus will take them to the Shaker Bowl in East Longmeadow, where children will have supervised bowling from 3:45 to 5.00 PM.

Parents must pick up their kids at the Shaker Bowl at 5:00 PM.  Fee is $9.50 per week and includes bus transportation, 2 games of  bowling, shoe-rentals, awards, and a free pizza party at the last session' Fee may be paid to the Shaker Bowl weekly or all at once the first day you go. 

You may join at any time BUT ONE WEEK PRE-REGISTRATION TIME IS REQUIRED.  Registration forms can also be picked up at the Recreation Office.. If either school has a half-day the program will be cancelled on that day at both schools.

  Children's Theater

Drama I - These classes will include elements of theater, improvisation, auditioning, script reading, and pantomime.  These classes will prepare your child for future development in drama.  At the last class the students will put on a show at which time family and friends are welcome.

  MLS Soccer Clinic

MLS MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER CLINICS

 

5 week clinic (Sundays) Beginning: April 18th (weather permitting) Ending: May 16th    (make ups due to inclement weather will be added on at the end of the session)

Fee: $75    Ages 5- 12+    Players will be grouped by age and will be given a 1 ½ hr “clinic time” after enrollment #’s are met.   Age groups: 5 – 6, 7 – 10 & 11 and up.

Min. per age group: 7   Max: 15     2- 15 coach/player ratio     

Give your soccer player a head start on the spring soccer season with the highly rated MLS program.  This “mini” 5 week clinic is geared toward starting the season off right.   Special drills emphasize fun while teaching fundamentals for the younger players, while review of skills and game savvy are stressed for the older players.  T-shirts and camp balls are available for $12.

  Indian Valley YMCA Girls Volleyball

This League is for girls between the ages of 11-14, to have fun, learn and play one of the most popular sports in the country. It is designed to introduce and enhance skills and to develop players for future school and club teams. Players will also have access to the USA Junior Volleyball Association’s newsletters, clinics, and events.

So, girls, call your friends and see if they want to sign up with you; then, tell your Mom or Dad which of your friends are going to join, so then you can too! Introduction to fencing provides a student with the basic guidance needed to undertake the exciting sport of fencing.

Students learn footwork, attacks, defense and history. The last class provides students with the forum to test their skills

against their classmates. Equipment is provided. Please call the Recreation Department with any questions. Intermediate

classes will be held on Saturday mornings from 9 – 10:30. Students must have taken the Introductory/beginner class or

have had prior fencing experience to participate in this class.

This program will teach the basics of downhill skiing.  The ski instructor will cover the correct techniques of turning, stopping, balance and straight ahead skiing.  A great introduction course for new skiers!   (you must have your own equipment. Registration for the Recreation Dept. Track & Field program will take place the first two weeks of April. 

The program is open to grades 4 - 8 and will begin in late April (weather permitting) and run until early June. 

Registration forms are available at the Recreation Office.

The Recreation Department track team has meets with other town teams from Ellington and Vernon.

Practices are held Mondays after school from 2:30 - 4:15 for grades 6-8 and 3:15 – 4:15 for grades 4-5. 

Meets are held on Wednesdays.  Parental participation is encouraged and necessary.  Come join the 40+

members of this great team and learn about the “other” spring/summer sport.

  Skateboard Camp

 

Plans are underway for a skateboard clinic on Saturdays this spring and

summer (dates to be determined).  Please contact the Recreation Office to

Come and learn all of the moves that will make you a skate boarding sensation. 

This program is geared for all skill levels from beginner to advanced.  The instructor will work

within the skill levels of the participants.  Safety and form will be emphasized.  Participants will

need a skate board, helmet, knee pads, elbow pads and wrist guards.

Children grades 2 and up will learn a different needlecraft during each week.  Discover a

Traditional approach in knitting, crocheting, needlepoint, embroidery and cross stitch.

Along with a variety of skills, the techniques shown include how to become familiar with

charts and understanding directions.  Through learning these crafts, they will also achieve

self expression and creativity.  Please register with the Recreation Office for this program.

  Instrument Lessons

Summer Instrument Lessons

When:  Lessons scheduled at the convenience of student

 

Private instruction is offered to students wishing to arrange lessons during the summer for the following instruments: piano, flute, clarinet, sax, French horn, trombone, baritone horn or tuba.  Lessons are available to students who have been playing as well as beginners.  Lessons are given by Lynne & Dennis Goss in their Somers home.  Both certified music teachers: Dennis is the Director of Elementary & Middle School music for East Windsor public schools.  Lessons meet once a week for a ½ hour. $18/lesson.

  After School Bowling

Fee is $10.00 per week

 

This popular Shaker Bowl after school bowling program is now in progress and will run until May 19th.   A bus picks up students at MBA and SES schools, where a supervisor will check them on.  The bus then takes them to the Shaker Bowl in East Longmeadow, where the children will have supervised bowling from 3:45 to 5.00 PM

Studio B:  This class will be used for the younger student who wishes to indulge in the creative

process.  We will use a variety of materials.
