Somersville Streetscape Plan to be Revealed
The Somersville Planning Committee is holding a Public Hearing at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 31st, 2007 at the Grammar School
Auditorium, 41 School Street, Somersville, CT. to present its recommendations for a Master Streetscape Plan that reflects
Somersville’s cultural and historic heritage in design, includes safe and comfortable pedestrian and bicycle access,
supports the town’s current and future economic development initiatives, and coordinates façade improvements,
green spaces, street lighting, and signage with streetscape landscaping, crosswalks and sidewalks, and parking requirements.
The area of prime interest for this study is the commercially zoned area of Main Street.
The Somersville Planning Committee was formed by the Board of Selectmen to evaluate current conditions and, with input from
the residents and businesses of the community, was charged to develop a master plan that identifies streetscape improvements
enhancing the overall appearance of Somersville and accentuating its traditional New England ambience, reclaims a sense of
place in the community, slows traffic through the village, and adds a more pedestrian-friendly atmosphere.
The plan identifies improvement projects, a phasing schedule, cost estimates and potential funding sources. Desired standards
are developed along with regulatory and permit review process changes necessary to achieve these standards.
Charts depicting the overall concept of the proposal are posted here and in the Somersville Post Office,
and Somers Town Hall for public viewing on or about May 22.
