 Transfer / Recycling Center
Residents are reminded that the "Blue Light Building" is closed. Please
consider finding alternate ways of disposing of unwanted, useable items.
Methods such as yard sales, donations to charities and organizations,
postings on Freecycle.org.,local bulletin boards or newspapers can be very
successful and less effort than bringing items to the transfer station,
where a charge for disposal may be incurred.
Transfer Station
will be closed in observance of Easter on Sunday, April 8, 2007 and open
normal hours on Monday, April 9, 2007 from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Change in Hours of Operation

The selectmen have taken this step to help reduce the cost of operating the
transfer station. Those costs have continued to increase at a rate higher
than any other part of town operations. The selectmen regret having to
reduce services in this way but are hopeful that Sunday afternoons represent
the fewest people affected combined with the most money saved.
You can help control some of these rising costs, especially the biggest one
– the cost of disposing of the general trash. The total tonnage of trash
shipped has risen dramatically over the last two years. One way to help
control this is for each of us to rigorously separate out all recyclables
before dumping our trash. Newspapers, magazines, junk mail, cardboard and
other packaging materials, glass, plastic, cans and any metal objects can
all be separated out and sent for recycling. This often brings the town some
revenue rather than having to pay to dispose of these materials.
The selectmen want to continue to offer the opportunity for people to bring
their own trash to the transfer station rather than to have to pay to have
it picked up at their homes. They need everyone’s help and cooperation to
make that happen.
Please bring any questions or concerns to the Selectmen at the town hall, by
telephone at 763-8200 or
by email at
selectman@townofsomers.necoxmail.com
