Walkable Workshop
On June 9,
2003,
local leaders, including elected officials, business people, citizens and
professionals gathered in Somers to define ways to make our community more
pedestrian and bicycle friendly. Somers was one of only eight communities in the
Hartford area selected by the Capitol Region Council Of Governments (CRCOG) to
hold a Walkable Community Workshop sponsored by the National Center for
Bicycling and Walking and funded in part through a grant from the Robert Wood
Johnson Foundation. This was a pretty elite group since CRCOG was one of only
nine regions in the country to receive such funding.
The workshop was led by Dan Burden and Sue Newberry, two experts in planning for
pedestrians. Mr. Burden is a nationally recognized authority in pedestrian
planning with 25 years experience in developing, promoting and evaluating
alternative transportation facilities, traffic calming practices and sustainable
community design. Ms. Newberry began her career in transportation as an activist
and has 20 years of experience in improving safety for those walking, bicycling,
and driving.
The primary focus was to generate local, hands-on solutions to problems of
walkability. The workshops strive to give people a “new set of eyes” with which
they can look at their communities and envision solutions. The workshop offered
suggestions for successful pedestrian design, and guidelines related to safety,
education, enforcement, and encouragement. A walking audit of Somers Town Center
area helped the group better understand and identify obstacles to walking and
suggested potential short-term and long-term solutions which will be
incorporated into the Town’s Plan of Conservation and Development and the 190
Corridor Study.
We want to thank CRCOG for this truly unique opportunity to learn techniques for
incorporating walkable design strategies into the development of our community.
As a follow up to the Route 190 Corridor Study, we want to be certain that our
Town Center, located on a state highway, is a safe and pleasant place to walk.
The ability of all citizens to safely get around on foot or bicycle should be a
basic level of service in any community.”
