Girl Scout Troop 5172 Soliciting Fleece Donations

Now Until December 10, 2006, fleece fabric donations are being solicited by Troop 5172.

Girl Scout Troop 5172 is currently involved in a service project in which the girls are making “tied” fleece blankets and donating them to the Hawkwing, Inc. organization.  Their donations will go to children that do not currently have any bedding.

About Hawkwing, Inc.:

Hawkwing, Inc. is a Native American Federal non-profit 501(c)3 organization created to offer cross-cultural education while assisting the people of the Lakota (Sioux) Cheyenne River Indian Reservation in South Dakota to meet their basic human needs.

Each year, they conduct a major collection drive in order to bring basic need items to some 3,000 children and 400 Elders on the Cheyenne River.  They are a volunteer group in which 100% of money and items donated go directly to the Lakota children and Elders.

Purpose Behind This Project:

This project will serve as a means for Troop 5172 to earn their Bronze Award.  The Bronze Award is the highest award earned as a Junior Girl Scout.  The Award requires each Girl Scout to learn the leadership and planning skills necessary to follow through on a project that makes a positive impact on her community. Working towards this award demonstrates her commitment to helping others, improving her community and the world, and becoming the best she can be.

How You Can Help:

Troop 5172 is soliciting donations of fleece.   The fleece will be used to make the “tied” blankets for their service project and will aide them in achieving their Bronze Award.  Specifications for the fleece are as follows:

·        Size:  Each blanket uses 4 yards of fleece.  Each side of the blanket must measure 2 yards in length.  When fleece is cut, it should be cut in one 2-yard length, not two separate 1-yard lengths.

·        Colors:  All fleece is greatly appreciated, however, it is preferable that prints and coordinating solid colors are donated so that individual blankets can be made from fleece provided.

Donations will be accepted until December 10, 2006.  If you are interested in donating, please contact Sherri French at 749-3730 or french000@cox.net.
