Open Burning Guidelines

The burn must be on the applicant’s RESIDENTAL property.

 

The permit is good for brush only, three inches in diameter or less.  No building materials, tire, paper, leaves, trash, pallets, etc. 

 

The pile(s) should be of a reasonable size.  The size of a car is a good example

 

All burn sites will be inspected by one of the Somers Fire Department open burning officials.

 

Hours of burning are between 10am – 5pm, within the date range of the permit.

 

The fire must be extinguished by 5pm.

 

You must call 860-875-2543 (Tolland County Fire Dispatch) prior to starting the fire. 

 

The burn must be attended at all times.

 

You MUST have a water source, such as a garden hose or extinguisher at the burn site sufficient to extinguish the fire.

 

The burn pile must be a safe distance from any structure or wooded area.

 

Please be considerate of your neighbors when burning.

 

If your burn gets out of control, immediately call 911 for assistance.

 

The State of Connecticut does not allow open burning during the months of June, July and August due to air quality.

 

Violation of any of these rules will result in the loss of current and future burn permits.
