Building
Project Moves Ahead
The architectural
firm of Tai Soo Kim has been engaged to finalize plans for the library
expansion and renovation, and the building committee has been working
with them to fine-tune the interior spaces and the exterior “look” of
the completed plan. We are carefully considering how the new, improved
building will serve Somers for the next twenty years and beyond. Once
the drawings are finished, you can expect to see new floor plans on
display in the library.
Careful
consideration is being given to the general ambience of the building as
well as the arrangement and convenience of the many different spaces in
the library. Tai Soo Kim conducted a comprehensive inventory of all
furnishings, shelving, artwork, and electronic equipment, including the
condition of each item. Whenever possible, items currently owned will be
re-used. The committee has also been exploring how the library can
remain open during most of the construction period. While the building
committee works on the building plans, the Selectmen are reviewing the
contract with the State for the $500,000 State Library Construction
Grant. Construction contracts cannot be awarded until the grant contract
is signed both by local and State officials. It is doubtful that
everything will be accomplished before cold weather sets in, so a spring
date is anticipated for groundbreaking.
A separate committee
will soon begin making plans for fundraising to help meet the expense of
this major project. We will continue to keep everyone informed though
the media and with displays. Keep watching!
